Punk Rock = Stress Relief?

Give vent to all your feelings, listen to Punk Rock by Tom Janison

Punk rock is a genre of music that opposes everything that traditional rock music represented. This kind of music came into prominence during the mid 1970s in countries like Australia, United States and the United Kingdom. However like all other genres of music it is rather difficult to pin point the exact time and place of origin. The exponents of punk music were bands like The Clash, Ramones, The Velvet Underground, Dolls of New York and Sex Pistols, in fact they were considered to be the earlier vanguard of punk music. Punk rock music is very aggressive and this is clearly evident in their dress, behavior, music, aggressive attitude, mannerisms and everything else that is associated with the punk musicians. Punk rock musicians had a DIY attitude and they were not very bothered about socializing. Punk rock became more famous in the United Kingdom in the 70s then it was in any other place.

Punk rock is characterized by certain particular features. Punk rock is largely different from rock music that was popular in the early 1970s; this kind of music was in no way tame, like the rock music in earlier days was. The exponents of punk rock were fed up of the music scene back in those days where all music sounded similar, and people were getting increasingly tired of listening to the same type of music again and again. It is during this time and due to the increasingly familiar music being dished out to music lovers, this genre of music came into being. Some of the characteristic features of punk music are angry messages against consumerism, stimulating stage presence, aggression and short frantic songs. Typical punk music instrument includes electric bass, 1 or 2 electric guitars, a drum kit and there is a vocalist singing the songs.

Sometimes punk music vocals sound nasal and mostly the lyrics of the songs are shouted rather then being sung in the conventional way. Normally punk songs last for about two and two and a half minutes, and sometimes the song may even last for less then one minute. Complicated guitar solos are not considered necessary for punk music, but one can find guitar breaks to be very common. While some punk bands have taken a soft rock approach with the guitar there are musicians that use highly distorted power chords in their songs. The bass guitar lines that are used are the most basic ones and helps in carrying forward the songs melody. Punk music bassists generally use plectrum instead of the traditional finger picking to play the instrument as they make use of a rapid succession of notes.

The lyrics of punk music are generally very frank and confrontational, and include comments on social and political issues. There are several punk songs that became a trend setter, some of them are Right to Work, God Save the Queen, Career Opportunities and Anarchy in the UK. All these trend setter songs were vocal about the prevailing anarchy in the social and political system at that time. Punk Rock symbolizes rebellion against any kind of disorder prevailing in a society.

iTunes Closing In On Top Spot

Research has indicated that iTunes is now the number three overall music retailer powerhouse, speeding past Amazon and Target in total units sold.  With almost 10% of the market share in the United States, verses second place Best Buy who has almost 14% of the market.

Who is number one?  I was shocked and amazed to find out Wal-Mart holds the number one slot with just about 16% of the music market share.

With music purchases dramatically shifting to digital downloads and the popularity of Apple’s iPod, iTunes will close in and most likely take the number music retailer spot before long.  Compact disc sales have dropped sharply over the past few years.

As the 2nd quarter comes to a close, nearly 212 million albums have been sold thus far.  This is down approximately 16% over last year’s sales.  With legal music downloads up 49 percent over the exact time frame.  Combined sales of digital music downloads and CD’s show a 14% increase over last year.

5 Important MP3 Player Questions

5 Important MP3 Player Questions   by C.S. Mackay

MP3 or a digital audio player to those in the know. For those people that are just catching up to technology or are a step or two behind technology, it is a listening device. You can down load music and take it with you instead of taking your tape deck and box or cassettes, or taking along your CD player and carting the pouch with your collection of CDs in it. These little devices can be taken wherever you go, the gym, the park, or sitting on the bus. There are so many choices when it comes to choosing an MP3 player that it boggles the mind. You may just want a simple one without all the fancy gadgets because they will just confuse you. Or you may want every conceivable feature that is offered because you understand how to use them all and they make you feel so “in the know”. Whatever your case may be there are some basic questions that you need to answer before you purchase an MP3 player.

1. What do you plan to do with your MP3 player? Is it for taking out or is it for aiding your current in house entertainment center? In other words do you want your storage to be on hard drive or flash-based? Hard drives tend to skip if you are moving unless there is a memory buffer. Flash based units are smaller and your pocket can hold them easily. They cannot carry as many songs as a hard drive can unless you buy a memory card

2. How good is your eye sight? Those display screens are extremely small and you must if you want to seek what music is being played. The screen also help you go through the options of controlling the volume, shuffling songs and using the equalizer. Be sure to check it out under all conditions such as indoors and outdoors. Is there glare when you try to read the screen?

3. How are you going to download music to your MP3 Player? You need to be able to connect to your computer so that you can transfer or download files of music. This requires connecting your MP3 Player to your computer with a cable. Sometimes the cable is included in the packaging and sometimes you need to purchase it separately. You can use a USB or FireWire to transfer the music. USB is the slowest.

4. Does the software you need come with the player and can you understand it? Most players come with that software and some of it is easier to follow than others.

5. What type of music files does your player support? You need to copy computer from a CD or you can download it from a Web site. You can save it on a variety of files. You need to know what type of music files your player supports.

After you answer these five questions you can then select the style that will fit your life style and start enjoying ‘your’ music because you get to select it and you will love them all.
