Tips For Learning To Sing Well

Some people are born with the gift of song, it comes naturally to them, flowing from their mouths like vocal poetry—music to the ears. For others, it is not such an easy feat. Years of practice training and hard work are dedicated to perfecting their voice all the while in search of that highly coveted “perfect pitch.” If you fall somewhere in the middle of perfect pitch and tone deaf, you may be like most people who would like to know how to sing well.

Here are a few tips to get you starting on singing well…

Know your range:

Vocal range is how high of a note you can hit to how low of a note you can hit. Some people have wide vocal ranges, and some don’t. If you don’t have a wide range, don’t fret, it isn’t as important as the tone of your voice. So find your range and stick to the notes within it. Work on improving the notes you can sing rather than worrying about the ones you can’t.

Posture:

Having proper posture will make a huge difference in your singing. If your posture is not how it should be, you won’t be able to breathe well, you may feel weak and therefore won’t have much power in your voice, and you may also get tense and nervous. Stand up straight, with your knees slightly bent—not locked. Have one foot slightly in front of the other; make sure your chest is open and lifted. Lift your head so your neck is parallel with the floor. In this position you will achieve maximum lung capacity allowing enough air to travel in and out for optimum vocal power. Relax your jaw, and face muscles, singing shouldn’t be straining your body!

BREATHE!

Breathing is one of the most important things you can to do sing well. Proper breathing techniques will allow you to have improved note control and pitch control. You will also be able to sing longer phrases and improve the tonality in your voice. Proper breathing should begin with your stomach. Take a deep breath in and imagine you are filling up a balloon in your stomach with air.

Push you stomach out as you breathe in. this may seem awkward and silly, but this will allow you to intake as much air as possible. As you let the air out, do so slowly and in a controlled manner. Slowly deflate the balloon, maximizing the amount of air that you let out with each note. Practicing this breathing technique will greatly improve your singing.
